The past and present are relevant to who we become in the future because we can learn from the good and the bad. But even if this was true yesterday, is it necessarily true today? Everything we experience and learn in our past and present shape our future. Can we not then forget it and devote our limited span of time to the study of the present, in which we must live, or even of the future which by our actions, however unconsciously, we determine? And that therefore the lessons of the past may guide us even in the present. The great thing about the past, they tell us, is that it is past. "If any." some indeed, i know, would say that there is none. A historian, like other men, lives in the present but his study is of the past and where some vestige of past habits still remains, to this institution, which places emphasis rather on the immediate present, I shall venture to consider the relation, if any between the two. History is something that will never change, it will stay the same forever and you can look back to it whenever. Not only does it help us make better decisions for our future, it also educates us about perhaps our background, family history and our future expectation. Our past history is key to a better future. I also think it’s important to know where you came from to know what direction to go in. History is interesting but not knowing it might lead you to repeat the same inventions that are already made where you make an effort but don’t get awarded for it.
